I put 225/45 17" Michelin Alpine PA3 snow tires on my E93 through the winter, and they worked pretty well. RWD cars are slower to get going in the snow than AWDs, but you shouldn't have any problems.

I have one on an E93 335i. It does a good job cutting down on draft with the top down, especially with the windows rolled up. Recommended.

Try to find one on eBay. I paid $400 for a new one.

You are right, this mat can only protect the bumper or the trunk interior at the same time. BMW makes carpeted and rubber mats that protect the interior of the trunk as well, so you can use both.
