New fan is around USD$260. Will take a closer look over the weekend and see if it looks possible to replace the bearing. Will keep you informed.

E83 has a separated box under the steering wheel (LCM), it is not integrated in the switch. It's easy to find and remove.

Yep, you nailed it. When load sensors get disconnected, headlights go into "safe mode" - aiming all the way down not to hurt incoming drivers eyes.
