You are right. Before my mechanic got all technical and stuff, I was using any oil for petrol engines really, for two years straight I think. And my car never complained. :D.

The normal engine oil is 5w - 40, but its hard to find. What other engine oil can I put into the engine of my E36 320i 1992 model automatic, petrol.

It could be that or a water leak is making water reach places it is not supposed to. My e36 320i has a radiator problem which was forcing me to pour water very often, the leak was somewhere down...

Not too sure about that because when the problem started, steam was coming out at the clamping arear, I then bought a new clamp. A few days later I discovered that the hose now has a fresh crack...
