When this happened to me, I used Loctite sleeve retainer ("green") when re-installing the sleeve in the knuckle. The sleeve never loosened up over the remaining 100k mile life of that E39.

R U sure that any oil is leaking OUT of the hole? It could be the oil filter housing gasket above it is leaking a bit (as usual) and some is collecting on the part you are concerned about.

It sounds like the dust shield got bent somehow and is rubbing on the rotor. Lots of noise, but easy to fix by just bending the sheet metal shield away from the rotor, as close to the normal...
