Actuallly the purpose of the tie rod removal was to replace the rack. So i wasn't to concerned about ruining the already ruined seals :)

Broken Vanos stud bolt

So my torque wrench doesn't go low enough and i decided to go ahead and do it by "feel". Bad idea. I broke one of the stud bolts that mounts the vanos to the head. I decided to button everything...

Can't get tie rod assembly off steering rack

I've tried channel locks, vice grips, even a 32mm combo wrench, and it won't budge. It is a right hand thread right?(lefty loosey). Should I buy a pipe wrench and try that?

Just recently bought a 2001 525i wagon with 188,000kms on it, and thought i'd post up some pics from my first road trip with it to Yellowstone.

The clip is not broken, and yes the boot is connected to the knob. So when i shift into second or reverse, it pulls the boot off the plastic retaining clip

Well this knob/boot was ordered through Bavarian Mortorsports and is an M3 Style shift knob/boot made to fit the 3 series cars. So it isn't just some 'run of the mill' type of product
