I always thought it was left over from new car delivery and the original owner asked the dealer to not remove it. Maybe a stretch to think it would last that long.

Yes, make sure you have the correct amount of fluid in there before you do anything else. The fact that you replaced the TC requires you to use more fluid and just a plain drain/fill.
