I had this happen a couple of years ago, driving back to St. Louis through slush. It lasted about an hour - fixed itself before I got home, and has never happened again.

Yes, a broken axle shaft would cause your symptoms. Your car does not have a limited-slip diff, so all the torque goes to the side with no resistance (the broken axle).
