If you have a Aux connector attached to your CD Changer, that is your problem. Disconnect it completely at the changer and see if your issues go away.

Mine looked worse than that and turned out great. $20 and a little effort and I was very pleased. I tried the Turtle Wax kit first and it did nothing.

As far as expansion tank it may be black. On my 98 528 it is semi-transparent. On my 2002 525 it's black. I don't know what year that changed.
