Since the OP stated it was not running, I think what the mechanic did was run a compression test, and what he found was that only two cylinders were building pressure....probably meaning the valves...

I think magnetic drain plugs are a good idea....

I think magnetic drain plugs are a good idea. They not only hold any stray bits out of harms way, they'll give you an idea of the condition of the engine/transmission/differential when you change...
