I used a piece of flat metal that I had left over - Ikea bracket - and fastend it to the spot where the solenoid retainer gets attached. Then I used a screw driver to leverage the solenoid in.

Sounds to me like the solenoids are not correctly seated. Pushing them in is not quite easy. I carefully used s.th. to leverage them in, as I could not push them fully in from hand.
