In both cases I used a hydraulic jack to lift up the knuckle so the half axle was about straight, and put like 3 4x4's...

I think the picture is misleading - Something wrong happened in that engine. A normal M52 engine even after 200K+ miles will look very clean inside, from my experience.

The rings are certainly ok.

Take it to a independent service place that knows BMWs, one you can trust. Sounds like CVV to me, moderate to easy DIY job...
