I had the same issue with the 530I, when i bought...

I had the same issue with the 530I, when i bought it, they serviced it but had put in regular oil, for months i could hear the same noise when cold starting etc...not sure what viscosity oil they put...

Yes it's a 2000 model and its just a SPORT model, no such thing as an E39 M Sport, only E60's are M Sports, E39 is an M-Teck and that's reserved for USA 2003 models only or Euro models from 2001...

Correct, i believe the Mid 2002 and all 2003 models had the water cooled alternator, mine being Jan 2002 build still has an air cooled alternator, hence the open duct.
