The TCM is located on top of the valve body ("Mechtronics") which is in turn located in the transmission oil pan.

If you change the oil at 5,000 miles then you'll be fine with just about any brand of oil. But, for the money, you might as well use a BMW-approved oil like Mobil 1 0W40, or the actual BMW oil made...

Agreed. I plan on selling the car at about 200k miles, and I didn't change the fluid until about 130k so our transmissions are in similar situations. I hope my transmission turns out like yours!

The "fix" is to either replace the malfunctioning SOS components or wiring, or have the car coded to remove the SOS functionality.
