E39 will do just fine in winter. Only issue is that if you get a lot snow on the road e39 like any other 2-wheel drive can't get through it. Real 4x4 with winter tires will easily manage 10+ inches...

Are you using a cheap DMM? I tried on a cheap DMM and I couldn't get readings (0L). With a decent DMM I got good readings and was able to determine the defective abs sensor.
