It replaced the stock mechanical fan that attaches to the water pump. It can be used in conjunction with the stock shroud. That's how mine is set up.

I'm not sure what it does, but I recently installed a CAI and removed the sensor and ziptied it to other hoses so it wouldn't move around. It hasn't made a difference and I've ran it for 2 weeks.
