The big indicators are the odometer and speed indication...

That extra wire you mentioned is the 'K' bus data/communication line, used to turn on the amp. The 'K' bus is used to talk to many of the cars modules.

Pre-Cat sensors (B1S1/B2S1) are closest to the exhaust ports. Post-Cat sensors (B1S2/B2S2) are down stream (after the cats)...

Several people over on another forum have replaced their fuel pumps without dropping the tank.
BMW's procedure does not require dropping the tank.

When I put my track wheels on the car (no sensors) then I get the light. I put the street wheels back on (sensors installed) the light goes out within 50 yards of driving.
