And consider this. Neither BMW, nor independent shops use XW30 here, nor is there any CAFE requirement. It's all XW40 to LL01 spec.

M1 0W40 is a pretty thin 40W. For an engine with high consumption I'd be looking for a thicker 40W personally after first trying to ascertain the problem.

Yes and no. POE has better heat carrying ability and doesn't oxidise as much as PAO but both are damn good at their intended task. Draining Redline gear oil with 60,000+kms on it made me a believer...
