Go to a leather shop and talk to a knowledgeable person there. I would assume the coating could be touched up and rubbed in to be less noticeable. I doubt you can get it to completely go away.

My cable went bad a few years ago. $17 at the DEALERSHIP! and it was fixed. Only took me about 10 mins to fix in a parking lot. Easy to check, just feel the tension on the cable at the throttle.
