Correct, 4 check valves. The engine in the pic above had them stuck open which allowed the oil to drain out of the vanos assembly. Other than an external o-ring there really isn't anything to go bad...

Seeing that you are taking the heads off there are oil check valves on each side of the top deck of the block. Looking at the pass side (bank1) it's located in the top right corner above cylinder 1....
