Maybe it was my volvo that I've taken the oil cap off while running? Well that makes me feel better that it's supposed to do this on a BMW! And yeah, I know it's not the way to check the oil level,...

Your shifting issues could actually be from the shifter rod itself and not the bushings, as was the case on my 98. On mine the ball that is at the end of the rod is plastic, whereas on other years...

Mine does this too, but only with the AC on. I've done all the normal stuff, like cleaned out the ICV and MAF. Don't know what causes it.

I understand that, but I don't necessarily need a symphony in my car, all I want is for the crackling sound to stop. Anything has to be better than listening to a broken speaker, which I've been...

I've had it for several years, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. It's annoying, but I have a feeling it would be expensive to fix.

Don't know about the bushings, but I'm sure you could...

I have a feeling it does it at higher speeds too, just don't hear it. I know while sitting still if I increase the engine speed it doesn't seem to shorten the time between the ticking.

Yeah but they are expensive. The thing is I know that some of these are interchangeable, for example the Z3 shift rods work in the E36's. Guess I'll just get a Z3 one instead.
