Yeah, plugs changed from the n54. A simple plug change wouldn't cause this unless something wasn't put together correctly, even then, I'd expect a code to be stored.

I've not taken one apart. Actually, you are the first person that I've heard that has had an issue like this on the diff. Most of the noise complaints come from those with the M diff in the cold...

It's a simple ZF automatic, not a dual clutch. Turner is confused with the model years. I believe the "is" model began in '11.

Is the smoke from the exhaust tip or from within the engine bay?

If you depress the throttle while the engine is off, what do you hear in the car? The throttle pedal has a spring that allows the pedal to rise, you may be hearing that sound.

No, no blame on the tire company, but tires do need a break-in period to be effective. You just hit some bad luck ... wet weather, cold road, cold/new tires.
