Just to follow up... mechanic did a smoke test, definitely had a vacuum leak at the DISA valve gasket. Took it off to find that the flapper was hanging on for dear life and would likely have fallen...

Thanks for these instructions! Not sure how long it took because I was also taking a few pictures and doing a QD to remove some bird droppings from the car, but I did all of that in 45 minutes.
