The E46 was the last sporty three series IMO. E9x are ok and I'd imagine/ hear F30 is more like a Lexus than sports car.

On a 335i near 50K you might want to look at the intake valves and clean if necessary. Also at that mileage swap the transmission oil/filter + maybe spray the MAF with cleaner...
