Sounds like you have a good solution too. Regarding the hot glue fix, permanence was the idea - I have no reason to change the grills if they are not loose (unless one takes a rock in the middle)....

Did you replace the fuel filter when you replaced the fuel pump? If the filter is badly clogged, even a new pump won't be able to push fuel through it. It also will stress the new pump.
