COULD be that your lower steering column knuckle is starting to bind up. Just happened to my 2007 328xi at 149k miles. I replaced the column DIY, and now that tight/heavy BMW feeling is BACK!

I suggest you clean your vanos solenoids to start with... and start thinking about a new water pump and thermostat. Sounds like yours is failing.

You might want to check out the two threads below... But I can tell you that I replaced my VCG and the Valvetronic gasket as well and never did anything "special" on reassembly except what you read...
