And, in your case, it's also the headliner holder-upper.

But, you'd need some sort of cable/harness to go from the black box underneath the pedal up to the input for the potentiometer connector under the dash (above the gas pedal).

The pedal on my 2000 7 doesn't have the black box, only my 2003 540 has the black box.
I took the gas pedal off my 7 years ago to add an aluminum cover. Exactly as it's shown in Mark's DIY post....

My GUESS would depend on whether your 97 has drive by wire or not.
I don't believe a Sprint Booster will work without a drive...

I haven't tried to put a "black box" accelerator on my 2000 740i (which came without the black box under the gas pedal, like yours, I assume).
You may have things a little confused...
