Yes it was offered, just not a common option in the US. My friend's newly acquired '96 (5/96 build) has the subwoofer and a speaker behind each seat. It sounds pretty damned good.

Ah, I know what slow feels like, and neither of my Z's are slow. The 157K mile one is just as responsive as the 31K mile one. Plenty of get up n go at all RPMs

I don't think that blanket situation applies to all. My '00 with 157,xxx miles is still on it's original seals and I don't have any problems with the VANOS unit at all.
