Were the codes thrown before or after replacing the vanos seals? It is possible (if you are lucky) that the exhaust cam sensor plug wasn't fully plugged in or has some oil in it.

How much of a gap do you have? The last 6-8mm get tricky because of engaging the locating rings. The splines of the transmission output shaft engage after maybe 30 mm of engagement.
