Mass airflow sensor

Get some of that CRC MAF cleaner and use it as it says on the bottle. That is first if that doesn't fix it you may need a new one

The dealer can reprogram with ISIS or legacy GT1 (if they will is another question). Or find an Indy that has ISIS or Autologics. The module has to be coded to your car.

Engine swap

You can do anything you want... I have seen the v10 in an e30. Anything is possible if you have the funds and time.

If you can find a donor 540/535 that would probably be more cost effective. ...

Then there is labour and cost to code the modules.

I would imagine it would be easier to put an M3 motor in. Don't quote me on that I would just think it is less involved.

Stubborn oil leak, what else could leak?

Also has the car run a lot after having this work? Could it be just residual oil from previous leak?

Yes there is a plastic cap supposed to be there. Not sure the cap seals it though it may need the outside air not under vacuum. Are you having issues or hear leak?
