You don't have symptoms of a fuel filter or pump. And Z3 filters are so large that I have not heard of one actually needing replacement. This one was half dirty in the bottom half at 80,000 miles....

Perhaps you have not seen the carrier into which the bushings go. The bushing is under a lot of compression. What you suggest would let the bushing push out as easy as it was pushed in.

I doubt that temperature has anything to do with the cutting out. The sensor is on the engine outlet (t-stat is the inlet). It informs the ECU which will display it on a ScanGauge or other such...
