I have one on my 328i Wagon. My assessment is that it is a "gentleman's" version of a sport exhaust in that it can be throaty at high RPM/near WOT and will pop and burble at throttle let off....

For the Original Poster, chances are the wiring harness at the top of the rear cargo door is damaged. If you pull back the rubber boot and inspect the wiring, you will likely find chaffed and cracked...
