usually that is all it is, but sometimes it is a solenoid and you have to change them. Luckily, now they sell them on eBay for around $400 for the set.

sounds like timing is off. Go to a Bimmer shop and have them read the codes. It could be camshaft sensors, solenoids, or timing guide. Also, it is more than likely in limp-home-mode.

At my shop, I tell customers to change their oil no longer than 10K for non turbo engines and 7.5K for turbo engines. BTW, I now only use European Liqui Moly Oils in my and my customers cars.

I used to use Castrol Edge 15K or Mobil 1 0W-40, or 5W-40 as long as you only go 10K miles between oil change intervals. They just will not go the 15K mile interval set on a lot of the older BMWs....
