The immobilizer of the Z4s uses RFID communication with the key. This is an extremely short range (i.e. extremely low RF power) system. On top of it, it does not work when the car is in "sleep" mode...

Mark, if I were you, I would do the same thing. The code reading at a trusty mechanic is definitely cheaper than the cable alone, not to mention the time spent installing the INPA and making yourself...
