That is the temp sensor as downhiller stated. Its supposed to be mounted in the DS brake cooling duct on the late model face lifted e30s.

Stick to purpose built exhaust systems and avoid drop in mufflers. The E30 runs a long OEM muffler for a reason, so if you're trying to avoid the drone get a system built specifically for your car....

No not normal. You're right, it should be close to the middle or a bit cooler when rolling. Not getting warm is an indication of a failed thermostat, temp guage or temp sensor.

They will fit but I would recommend 5 or 10mm hub centric spacers or the wheels will be way up under the car. This will also give it a narrow track and reduce side to side stability in corners.
