I can definitely say that my 2006 E90 is the WORST BMW that I have ever owned. It has gone above and beyond routine maintenance with constant failures and unexpected repairs.

Sorry I never resolved this thread! The culprit (according to the dealer) was both the reverse light switch in the transmission and some codes caused by low battery voltage (which I later debunked)....

Either way, I wouldn't chance trying to run a "different" transmission. It is highly unlikely that some sort of compatibility issue wouldn't arise, and the transmission itself probably doesn't cost...

the automatics are geared waaaaay differently as are the manuals. afaik the only similarity in the transmission for the 318/325 are that it's made by getrag and that the bell housing is the same....
