Talk to another BMW owner in your neighborhood or buddy that has an m52 powered car, swap and see if issue goes away. Simple trouble shooting that takes 10 minutes tops.

Sounds like a symptom of a failing MAF, how many miles on the car? Do you use an oiled K&N filter? If so you should not the oil contaminates the sensor.

Check the reference senders, Eta's and E30 M3's have a index tooth wheel on the flywheel and two sensors that say when to fire and to add fuel. Both are located on the bell housing on the drivers...
