The air ducting in the HVAC is lined with foam rubber. The foam gets gummy, and flakes off. You'll need to disassemble the dash to fix this.

Did the shop evacuate the system and recharge according to weight? If too much refrigerant was put in (using pressure gauges), the compressor would be disabled by the over-pressure switch.

If you're going to wrench on this car, you need a scan tool....
