Idle is controlled by the ECM in conjunction with other parts

The only way to adjust it is to have all parts working correctly, not by making an idle adjustment like the carburetor days of old.

I know exactly what you are referring to. I have an '01 330i. The steering was pretty good until I got the retrofit and now its worse. Dealer and BMW wouldn't do anything about it.

I can't answer the "how hard" question for your particular model. I would refer to the Bentley manual to answer that question. This is not a part that dies slowly, and it can cause engine failure...
