What I did was buy a random used e46 key off of ebay, program it to open the car, and hid it inside a magnetic box under the car. Used keys can be bought for under $20, and are easy to obtain.

Jump off the starter and see what it does. All you need is an alligator clip and some patience. Even if you need to change it, it isn't really that bad, there is just enough room to swap it out...

The starter is a PITA to get to unless on a lift. The wire with the 10mm nut is the one that supplies the 12v to the starter so it will turn over.

I think it is a 8mm allen. I do not remember it being a torx. If it is really boogered up, you can put an extractor on it and get a new fill plug from the dealer.

They are the same. You will not have an issue with the 128i transmission. I have put a 328i transmission in a 128i, so I am pretty sure they will work vice versa.

When you pulled over and shut it off, you reset the transmission. It was in failsafe mode when you left the stop sign, which is third gear. Get it scanned and post up the codes.
