The starter bolts that don't thread into the starter, but have loose nuts on the engine side, is one of the stupider things I've seen from a German auto engineer. They did fix this in later model...

Good point. Note that the M50 (525i) calls for a heavier oil than you may expect - 20W-50 in summer temps. Some forum-searching will show you that 5W-30 or 10W-30 can often result in ticking lifters.
