Beautiful car, very well maintained!! I'd buy it but, I have one in white in similar condition, except with 145 Kmiles. I'm curious if you have ever had to open the engine? I have not yet had that...

Sorry to be slow. The camshaft timing sensor frequently goes on the E34s, M or otherwise. It is not easy to access, but not horrible either. There is another ignition spark sensor that attaches to...

Probably you can replace it, but I would definitely find a car stereo shop that would do the work. Unless you are familiar with BMW circuit diagrams (which are available) and very comfortable with...

Great! I have owned one for 10 years, now with 140KMiles on it, and find it still a thrill. The engine is the most expensive part, so that should be the priority. The oil track record is important...

sad battery

If you only drove 20 minutes, I don't think a new battery would be discharged even if the alternator was inoperative. To check the alternator, measure the battery voltage when running: it should be...

If it's a BMW radio (the non M E34 series will be the same) then I would start with the amp for the speakers, which is located in the left (drivers) side of the trunk. Remove the mat on the left...

Thumbs up 88 was a good year!

They are beautiful cars! I agree with all the posted comments. I would count on roughly $10K to "revitalize" it over the next 1-2 years. If no rust, it's worth it. If rust, run....

The rich mixture seems odd to me, but the valves should be adjusted when they "are out of adjustment" for other reasons, including damage to the valves and seats. The trick, of course, is to know...

I've never heard of a radio doing that. It seems unlikely. Perhaps you're one of the lucky few for whom a problem has disappeared, but best to keep an eye on it. One day sitting is not the same as...

Since the battery is new and presumably good, either it's not getting charged or there is a severe current drain (like a light on all the time) when the car is off. You can check whether the battery...

Great! That's really good to know. (That the 525 is ok on 18 inch wheels.) They look much better than even 17s. Thanks.

front shocks

Interesting! The rear shocks of most E34 M5s are automatically adjustable, but not the fronts. The 3.8 is clearly different.

I doubt Bilstein, or any other manufacturer except BMW, could...

front shocks

Bilstein (Sport, which is a stiffer version of their shock) is perfect for the E34M5, as they are for almost any car. I have used them for years, and find them superior to stock. Konis are ok too,...

e34 Rims

If the E34 is an M car, the 18 inch combo you suggest would be fine. I recommend Michelin PS2 tires run at 40 PSI. If not an M, I'd stick with 17 inch wheels. -Gil

Ignition Question

I suspect this question below pertains to many BMW engines, although the sensors and the leads from the sensors differ slightly Model to model. Any philosophical advice appreciated; or suggestions on...

E34 M5 Ignition Question

My 1991 E34 M5 has a broken "cylinder identification" sensor. This device appears to be a toroidal coil on the #6 ignition wire which apparently provides an inductively sensed pulse to tell the DME...
