First thing I would suspect (from my own experience with my E39 sedan) is rear ball joints. Since you replaced those, I would then suspect tires. I would inspect and try another set of tires/wheels...

The kinda did for me...both the DW and DWS. Both wore out extremely fast too. The ride was nice though...and grip was okay, dry and wet. But the soft side walls did seem to sacrifice steering...

Good diagnostic. I had a similar problem years ago...I had to get a new water valve assembly (whatever its called) with the aux pump included...sucker was about $450 or so.
Replaced it previously...

I recently switched to the Castrol Edge 0w-40 and still have the intermittent cold start rattle. I've never found a correlation between oil brand or weight and the frequency of the cold start rattle....

I'm doubtful that a different oil will have any effect on the cold start-up rattle. As you stated, the spring does the work at start up, then the hydraulic piece does the work once oil pressure...

Sorry you are incorrect. Synthetic oils THIN as they get hotter...and thicken when cold. Please reread the link I provided in a previous thread, which explains how oils (and synthetic oils) work....
