The 4.4 and 4.8 actually have better fuel economy than the 3.0. I know that sounds crazy. I didnt believe it myself but its true. They do 1 to 2 mpg better than the 3.0. You can do a search and see....

I believe that is a check valve or pressure valve. yes you do need it installed. I had one come out in one om my cars about 20 years ago. I just stuck it back in the hole it came out of and was good...

That may be a blessing in disguise if its a 4.8l! If it is a 4.8is it could be the valve stem seals and more. This seems to be a common problem and a very expensive fix. I have heard stories of $5000...
