I recently had the driveshaft bearing go on my 05 X3. I did not have a rattle but the car sounded like a diesel when it was moving. Cost me about $450 to have it replaced by the dealer.

Turns out it was a faulty brake switch. Found a post by logical on e46 Fanatics that had the exact same symptoms I was having. He had found that the brake switch was bad. Replacing it sorted out...
