Don't try any of the products for resurfacing hazy headlights. None actually work, and even if they seem to work for a few months, the haze comes right back worse than before. Trust me, just buy...

First off, read the wiki (see link at top of page). Then read it again. It should fill you in on the standard responses -- if it has an auto, there is a risk that your reverse will go out. Cooling...

From my understanding, low coolant light is triggered by the level sensor installed into the bottom of the expansion tank. Fill the tank, light should go off. Check your tank on level ground first...

Dropped and installed a transmission on a 1987 Suzuki Samurai this weekend. It sat for two years and the clutch wouldn't disengage, turns out the friction disc had rusted to the flywheel and...

I have 150k on my 2004, and the car runs great and has been relatively trouble-free. I do virtually all my own maintenance and repairs (as needed), and spend far less than the 1k-$2k per year...

Figure out a) where it's leaking from; and b) how much it's leaking. Most common leak is from the cover, as they used a paper gasket (now discontinued) which wore out and leaked, and they now make a...

I had this thought too before doing the flush, but I found some had had success with the Lubro Moly flush and it was recommended by Smolck who I think knows what he's talking about.

I still tend...

Following up on this. Drove about 2500 miles in the last six weeks or so, and it burned a qt in that time. Thus, oil consumption is possibly slightly worse but certainly no better. Now I have to...

First of all, I think this serves as anecdotal evidence that e46 owners NEED NOT replace the intake manifold gasket as routine maintenance.

Second, changing to another ll01 oil would not cause the...

Sad to hear of this. I'm resigned to the fact that my next car will be much less fun than my e46, although I'm going to hold off on getting rid of it as long as possible. I got my car in my fun...

Here is the cocktail I went with: two qts high mileage 10w40, bottle of Bar's RMS repair, rest with 0w40. I also did the Lubro Moly flush. Now time to drive it and monitor oil usage.

I looked more closely into my choices. The M1 0w40 (ll01) is api certified SN/SM/SL/SJ. The high mileage 10w30 is only api SL certified (which technically is approved for a 2004 motor). The HM...

Can you elaborate? I'd think a 30- or 40-wt would be just fine at operating temp, but I'm no expert? What is HTHS, what is it supposed to be, and what is the high-mileage 10w-30/40 measure of the...

Ah, I see. It's weird that it hardly consumed any oil (except for the obvious OFHG leak) for the first six or seven years I had it, and its just in the last 2-3 years that it's "consuming" oil,...

I'm ok adding a few qts every once in a while, and I don't expect any oil to be a magic elixer that will suddenly stop all leaks and add 10 hp. Just wondering if it would have an effect.

Anyone tried M1 high mileage 10w-30?

Let's get this out of the way first:
"NOT ANOTHER OIL THREAD." Sorry.
"USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION." I did.
"IT'S NOT LL-01 APPROVED!" I know.

147k miles on the clock and it runs like a champ,...

Re: DIY Oil Separtor, DISA, ICV

From personal experience I can again advise -- this is NOT the project to try to save a buck by using aftermarket parts. OEM only for this one.

Re: Where's the tipping point?

If it's paid off, it will be cheaper to maintain than a new car payment. I'm at 140k, and it seems maintenance & repairs come in fits and spurts every 6 months or so. I think $1k/yr is about right...

Re: Don't buy an aftermarket MAF

"MPG Auto Parts" haha. Sounds suspect. Sort of like getting a "Pittsburgh" or "Chicago" brand tool from Harbor Freight -- bold name means made by a 6 year-old in Shenzhen.
