This is what everyone said in the 70s with the E21 and again in the 80s with the E30. People complained that BMW had lost its focus, its niche.

I actually thought the 320i with MT and sport package felt very pure. I like the minimalistic idea. Reminds me of my 1994 325is.

Their corporate borrowing rate may be quite low, but I'm not so sure about loans secured by revolving consumer auto loans.

I highly doubt that BMWFS is making a 1-2% net margin after administration expenses and loan losses on their consumer auto loans. If the average rate on their loans is 3%, they would have to...

I'm a little suspect of the 21%. If it's a real number, I'd like to know how it was computed. I'm in the investment business and I know the returns of various asset classes over the 10 years from...

They do collect interest on the lease but this would be largely offset by borrowing costs to raise that capital in the first place. True, there is a bank fee, but they also have to administer the...

You're just using a lease to finance your investment portfolio, which is no different from using a vehicle loan or a margin loan for the same thing. All three methods involve leverage and bear an...

No.

BMWFS's cars have been paid down to the residual. Now they have to sell them to the dealers at a low enough price so that the dealers can resell them for a profit. I figure that they must be...

I'm generally in agreement with your entire post except there's one main point you left out. BMW flattens out the depreciation curve with its inflated residuals. The result is that the cost of...

I would point out that you can always buyout the car at the end of the lease. In many cases, you can buy for less than the residual. This was the case with my '07.

My '07 530i was such a car. I leased it first then bought it out. Ultimately, I sold it for far more than book value after 7-1/2 years. The car was completely trouble free.

That said, had I...
