Parts counter guy is not the best source of info. This oil has the same specs as the last: LL01 or LL04.
Shell gave BMW a better deal than Castrol did. Just a business decision.

A 0W40 would be a good choice in Canada for year round use. The 0W means it is relatively "thin" at cold temps...

There are a number of 5W40 oils sold here in the US that meet the appropriate BMW oil spec for your vehicle (BMW LL01). I believe Mobil1 0W40 meets this spec too.
