I would trust the CEL. If you're still getting the crankshaft error, then I would change it. Thisis an unusual error (camshaft is much more likely)... but if it fails, the engine will not run.

If cats are a problem, normally you can force a CEL by driving over 4000rpm. The cylinders will start to misfire...

+1 You're talking about spending a fortune but coils may not fix the problem. I have never heard of all 8 coils & spark plugs going bad at once. $800 to replace the CCV? Geez. Find a new mechanic....
