This was exactly the problem. Once I got her up in the air it was clear that the part was gone and a technician informed me that this was indeed the issue.

Got the part replaced (no issue at all)...

Found the issue and it was what is called a GUIBO. Not sure if the term stands for anything. Apparently this rubber piece as well as the rear diff bushings really like to fail on Zs or E 36/7 drive...
