update - final! The trans was gone. Got one from BMW with 2 yr warranty, unlimited miles, $6000. Installed by an independent shop. Total cost $7700 with tax. Painful, but it's great to drive the car...

1. despite of its name, the BMW limp mode isn't too limpy. The car drives fine on freeway, smooth at 65 mph or higher, 27-28 mpg. Only trouble is getting it...
